PRSSA Chapter at Oglethorpe University

Do you have aspirations to pursue a career as either a Communications, Marketing, International Business, Film & Video, or Public Policy professional? Joining the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) organization can be the bridge from college to leaders of the world’s largest multinational firms.
The Public Relations Student Society of America is a pre-professional, national organization with a focus on preparing students for careers in business, communications and public relations. PRSSA connects you to members in the professional, national organization, Public Relations Society of America, who represent nearly every practice area, from sports and entertainment to government and investor relations, in corporations, nonprofits, and agencies.
The PRSSA chapter here at Oglethorpe University started its inaugural year in the spring of 2018. Over the course of its existence, the organization has sponsored activities such as the Careers in Communications: Digital and Media panel, Careers in Communication: Sports Communication Panel, Agency/Organization Tour visits, PRSA Georgia Conference Attendance for Oglethorpe students, and our Dining to Donate Fundraisers to raise funds to invest in the development of Oglethorpe students.
A common misconception is that PRSSA is only aimed for those interested in the fields of Public Relations, Communications, and Journalism, but it’s so much more! PRSSA is an organization for anyone looking to develop their communication skills that will help launch your career, broaden your network, and enhance your education.
Did you know that Communications lays a foundation in roles such as Public Relations Specialist, Marketing Research Analyst, Lobbyist, Policy Analyst, Financial/Crisis Communications Manager, Human Resources Generalist, Diversity and Inclusion Manager, and much more?
Oglethorpe University’s chapter of PRSSA gives students an opportunity to associate with peers and professionals and share knowledge of business and communications opportunities and standards through guest speakers, dine and discuss workshops for students to develop PR and communications skills, and agency tours to expose students to local, regional, and national businesses in order to get a feel for what life is like post-graduate.
In addition, we offer a mentorship program to Oglethorpe’s PRSSA members, where we match students with experienced professionals who can provide guidance on job searches, professional development, ethics, and other interests. Where you want to go, PRSSA is there and wants to help you get there too.
We will be holding a general meeting for students who have an interest in Public Relations Student Society of America on September 12, 2019 at 1:15 PM in TLCC 225 (The Fishbowl). You can follow Oglethorpe’s PRSSA on Instagram at @prssa_ogle and on Twitter at @PrssaO for information about our upcoming events.
The executive board of Oglethorpe’s PRSSA includes President Dejoisnet Spence, Vice President Valencia Barnes, Secretary Manuel Portillo, Public Relations Director Deisi Casillas- Miguel, Faculty Adviser Dr. Katherine Keib, and Professional Advisers Renee Vary and Todd Bennett from the Oglethorpe Communications Department.
We are currently looking to fill the position of Treasurer. If you are interested, you can contact Dr. Keib at kkeib@oglethorpe.edu.
