Oglethorpe Student Starts Campus Dance Class

On Monday Oglethorpe University student, Coyvan Greer, hosted his first dance class in the Schmidt dance room at 7 p.m. The class, which lasted an hour, featured Greer’s original choreography and was open to all students regardless of dance experience.
In addition to other campus activities, such as Ronald Dill’s weekly yoga class, Greer’s dance class offers students an artistic and exciting way to exercise amid a busy schedule! Finding time to exercise while managing a full student schedule can be daunting, especially after a long day of classes. Fitness options, such as dance, allow for students to break a sweat without dreading the monotony of running on a treadmill. Luckily, this semester Greer’s class will become a weekly staple.
Melinda O’Connor, a junior at Oglethorpe University, attended Coyvan Greer’s dance class and found it to be a great way to gain a mental and physical workout. “It’s hard to find time to exercise between my classes and my internship,” said O’Connor. “Nighttime dance classes work well for me, and they’re a great form of exercise like cardio – have you ever seen a dancer’s body?”
Similarly, O’Connor admires the mental benefits of dancing. She believes she is able to emphasize the creative part of her brain when learning choreography. “We use the analytical part of our brains all day in class and dancing helps to get the creativity out.”
In fact, many researchers have found links between dancing and improved cognitive functions, making Greer’s class the perfect study break for dedicated students.
A passionate dancer himself, Coyvan Greer admires dance for its wide variety of benefits. “It allows me to have fun, challenge myself, and get some exercise in a less traditional way,” said Greer. “With the class I’ll be able to grow more as a dancer and teacher while also helping people grow more in their confidence and dance skills.”
Greer believes that his class is a great way for students to learn more about dance without committing to a dance company or dance team. Plus, his classes are completely free for Oglethorpe University students!
If you find yourself in need of a more exciting workout, be sure to check out Greer’s second dance class next Monday at 7 p.m. in the Schmidt dance room!
