Oglethorpe University Participated in National Walk-Out Day

March 19, 2018

In honor of the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting, schools across the country participated in a form of peaceful protest: they walked out of class rooms. At 10:00am in each timezone, over 1 million students at all educational levels, walked out of their schools. Oglethorpe University was one of these schools.

This initiative was backed by the Women’s March, a non-profit focused on forms of peaceful protest that was formed after the record breaking Women’s March on Washington last year. In tandem with the #neverforget movement, National Walk-Out Day took on the hashtag of #enough, relating to the fact that many Americans believe the number of deaths by shootings in the past years has been too much.

Students, faculty and administration alike turned out in droves for Oglethorpe’s Parkland Vigil. Student Government Association (SGA) and Student Life partnered with various on-campus activists to read out bios about the 17 victims. The reading was followed by a moment of silence.

Events will be continuing in relation to the #enough movement. Keep your eyes out and take some civil action.
